Fluids Beyond the Oil

Engine oil gets the attention because it has an obvious interval. The others matter and are more often neglected.

Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air over time, which lowers its boiling point. It is tested at every service, and it matters most on a car that works its brakes on grades or in heavy traffic.

Coolant does more than resist freezing. Its inhibitor package prevents corrosion inside the engine, the radiator and the heater core, and once those inhibitors are spent the coolant starts attacking the system it sits in. Coolant types are not interchangeable and mixing them can cause them to gel.
