Credentials: Mr Mobile Mechanic of Charlotte
Inviting a mechanic to work at your home or workplace is different from dropping a car at a shop. This page sets out what you are entitled to ask any mobile mechanic before they arrive, and how we answer each of those questions. Call 704-741-4749.
What to Verify Before Anyone Works on Your Car
A mobile mechanic comes to your driveway, works beside your home, and leaves with your money. That is a reasonable thing to check on first, and a legitimate operator expects the questions rather than resenting them.
Five things are worth establishing with anyone, including us.
A verifiable business identity. A business name, a fixed contact number that is answered, and a real service address rather than only a mobile number and a social media page. Ours is Mr Mobile Mechanic of Charlotte, 525 N Tryon St, Charlotte NC 28202, on 704-741-4749.
Liability insurance. A mechanic working on your property should carry it. The question to ask is simply whether they are insured for work carried out at a customer’s location, because some policies cover a workshop only.
A written quote before work begins, with parts and labour separated.
A clear position on what happens if the job cannot be completed where the vehicle is. A car left dismantled in your driveway is the worst outcome of a mobile visit, and it is entirely avoidable by making an honest judgement before starting.
A warranty position stated up front, covering both parts and the labour to fit them.
What We Commit To
Diagnosis before parts. A measurement or a test result supports every recommendation, and we show you the reading. Pad thickness in millimetres, rotor thickness against the minimum stamped on the rotor, a scan tool value, a pressure reading. If we cannot point at something, we say we are not certain yet.
A quote agreed before work starts. Anything found during the job prompts a call rather than an addition to the bill.
An honest assessment of what suits a mobile visit. Where a job needs a lift, a press, alignment equipment or the dashboard out, you are told before anything is taken apart, and told what the work actually involves.
Old parts available for you to see. You are entitled to them, and a worn part is easier to understand when it is in front of you.
Your property left as we found it. Drain pans and ground sheets under the work, and used oil, old filters and old batteries leaving with the van for recycling. Used motor oil and lead-acid batteries are hazardous waste, and Mecklenburg County storm drains run to local creeks.
Working Safely at Your Location
The parts of the job you would not necessarily think to ask about, and which separate a professional visit from an improvised one.
The ground gets assessed before the car does. Charlotte is not flat, and a sloped driveway is a poor place to lift a vehicle. Where there is real grade, the work moves to the flattest available surface, the car goes onto rated axle stands rather than staying on a jack, and chocks go on the opposite axle.
Equipment is rated for the vehicle. Jacks and stands have working load limits and they matter.
Brake and exhaust components on a car that has just been driven are genuinely hot, so that work starts after a sensible cooling period rather than immediately.
Hydraulic work moves under cover in heavy rain. Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air, so an open reservoir during a Charlotte thunderstorm is a poor idea.
Where a vehicle has stopped somewhere genuinely unsafe to work, such as a narrow interstate shoulder, the honest answer is that it needs moving first.
Knowing the Rules We Work To
Competence in this job includes knowing the regulations that affect your vehicle in this county, because they change what a repair means.
North Carolina requires an annual safety inspection before a registration can be renewed, carried out no more than 90 days before the plate comes due. It examines twelve items: headlights, accessory lights, directional signals, the foot brake, the parking brake, steering, tires, the horn, the rearview mirror, windshield wipers, the exhaust system and emission control components.
The critical part is how failures are treated. The state is explicit that all safety items must pass and that a waiver cannot be issued for the failure of a safety item. So a brake, steering or exhaust failure has exactly one resolution.
Mecklenburg is also one of only 19 North Carolina counties out of 100 where a vehicle must pass an on-board diagnostic emissions inspection at the same visit. Emissions failures do have a waiver route, requiring documented repairs of at least 200 dollars aimed at the cause, a re-inspection, and a visit to the State Highway Patrol Investigative Services Unit.
Knowing that distinction matters to you, because it determines whether a fault has to be repaired or whether a documented route exists.
Parts and Warranty
Where a choice of part exists, it gets presented as a choice rather than decided silently.
Original equipment parts match the manufacturer’s design exactly and cost the most. Quality aftermarket parts, many made by the same firms that supply the vehicle makers, are the sensible choice for most components. Remanufactured units are good value for alternators, starters and calipers. Budget parts are a false economy on anything carrying load or sealed by a rubber boot, because the labour gets paid twice when they fail early.
Warranty covers the part and the labour to fit it. A part that fails within its warranty is replaced without charging you to do the work again, which is the only version of a warranty that means anything.
What We Will Not Do
Worth stating, because it says as much as a list of services.
We will not quote a repair over the phone without seeing the vehicle. Nobody can diagnose a noise down a telephone line.
We will not recommend work we cannot point at. If there is no measurement, there is no recommendation.
We will not start a job in a driveway that we can see will need a workshop halfway through.
We will not replace parts in sequence to chase a fault while you pay for each attempt. That is the customer funding a process of elimination.
We will not pressure you to decide immediately on anything that is not a genuine safety item, and where something is urgent we will explain exactly why.
Where We Work
Across Mecklenburg County and the Charlotte area: Uptown, South End, NoDa, Plaza Midwood, Dilworth, Ballantyne, University City, Steele Creek, Matthews and the Lake Norman area. Homes, workplaces, apartment and condo parking, parking decks and roadside locations where it is safe to work.
One practical note for decks. Most Charlotte parking decks post a clearance limit at the entrance, commonly between six and seven feet, and the service van has to clear it. Confirming the posted height when you book saves a wasted trip, and a word with the attendant or building desk in advance avoids that conversation happening mid-job.
